Sanford R. Kurtz, MD, is chief operating officer of Lahey Clinic, a nonprofit, multispecialty health care organization based in Burlington, Mass. He has been with Lahey Clinic since March 1982, serving as both chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and medical operating officer before being appointed chief operating officer in December 1999.

As chief operating officer, Dr. Kurtz is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Lahey Clinic and is the senior administrative leader. He also serves as vice chair of the Clinic's Board of Governors, a body of physicians that serves as the executive leadership of the organization, and as a member of the Board of Trustees.

For the past three years, Dr. Kurtz has managed Lahey's Internet based, high-risk patient population management program and written and presented its results. He has also developed programs that integrate clinic-based outpatient care management and community-based resource programs to improve health outcomes.

Dr. Kurtz received his medical degree from the six-year medical program at the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at New England Deaconess Hospital and his internship at Boston City Hospital.

Dr. Kurtz is currently chair of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA). In addition, he is past chair of the Steering Committee of the Group Practice Improvement Network (GPIN) and serves as chair of the Advisory Committee to the Trustees on Group Practice of the American Medical Association.
