Important! Medical Resident FICA Tax Refunds FAQ
Potential Future FICA Refund Claims (after March 31, 2005)
On January 11, 2011, the Supreme Court held that Medical residents are employees for purposes of the FICA tax. The 8-0 decision upheld treasury regulations issued by the Treasury Department that wages earned by medical residents working 40 hours or more per week are subject to FICA taxes. This decision applies only to quarters beginning after March 31, 2005; it does not effect a former resident's potential right to a refund for quarters previous to April 1, 2005 as discussed in the FAQ above.
2010 Postgraduate Recognition Day
The Alumni Association hosted its 21st Annual Postgraduate Recognition Day on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Dr. John Coller, chair, Postgraduate Recognition Day; and Dr. Richard Nesto, chief medical operations officer, extended a warm welcome to attendees. On this day, 65 residents and fellows prepared to join the ranks of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center alumni following their graduation ceremonies.
The event, chaired by Dr. Coller, Colon and Rectal Surgery, is designed to acknowledge the first-rate research and clinical practice engaged in by Lahey's residents and fellows.

Four individuals were selected to present their papers at the ceremony: Fahad Al Sindi, MD, MRCP, General Internal Medicine; C. Robert Litchfield, BS, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery; Adam J. Rana, MD, Orthopaedic Surgery; and Elisha P. Tilton, MD, Ophthalmology.
Sara M. Lenherr, MD, Department of Urology, won the poster award.
