Ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, is the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer. It is called ductal because the cancer is found in the milk ducts and "in situ" because it is contained or confined to the milk ducts. DCIS is usually detected by a mammogram.

Approximately 20 percent of all new breast cancer cases are DCIS. The good news is that the cancer for women at this stage can be successfully managed. The most common treatment for DCIS is a lumpectomy, or breast-conserving surgery, followed by radiation treatments to the breast. However every woman and every case is different.
