• Trichomoniasis

    Giemsa stain of Trichomonas vaginalis protozoansTrichomoniasis is caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. The vagina is the most common site of infection in women, and the urethra is the most common site of infection in men. In the United States, an estimated 5 million new cases of trichomoniasis occur each year in women and men. Treatment of both the patient and the partner with a drug called metronidazole is usually curative, but repeated infections are common.
