Bariatric Surgery Fellowship

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, an ACS Bariatric Surgery Level IA Center of Excellence, offers a one year fellowship in bariatric surgery with the focus of the experience on minimally invasive bariatric surgery. The anticipated case volume will surpass 250 bariatric cases with approximately 50% laparoscopic gastric bypasses and the rest divided between laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, revisional bariatric surgery, and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. At completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be competent in intra-corporeal suturing and performance of complex laparoscopic operations.

The fellow's schedule will include two to three days per week in the operating room, one to two days per week in the clinic, and one day per week spent on clinical research projects. There is a weekly Bariatric Clinical Case Conference, M&M Conference, and GI Radiology Conference. In addition, there are monthly Grand Rounds and Bariatric Journal Club. The fellow will take occasional calls from home, but not exceeding one weekend per month.

In addition to bariatric surgery, there are opportunities to participate in non-bariatric general surgical cases, including endoscopy, laparoscopic foregut operations, and laparoscopic solid organ resection. These opportunities, however, have to be coordinated with the General Surgery Chief Resident.

Academic work is strongly encouraged and supported through monthly meetings and a generous travel stipend, which will cover expenses associated with all regional and national meetings where work has been accepted.

The fellow will have teaching responsibilities that will include monthly Bariatric Journal Club presentations and supervision of junior residents and medical students in skills training in the Simulation Center. In addition, the fellow will interact with junior residents and medical students on rounds and in the operating room. Attendance of at least one professional development course through Tufts University Medical School is strongly encouraged to help develop the fellow's own teaching and clinical research abilities.

Special features of this program include focus on learning over service, with access to multiple educational opportunities, including a simulation center, outstanding conferences and educational opportunities, and a high caliber general surgery residency program on site. This is in addition to learning advanced laparoscopic surgery and bariatric practice administration from a highly successful program with extremely low complication rates. Our team is dedicated to providing the highest levels of care and in training surgeons to meet the highest standards of excellence. We look forward to working with the appropriate candidate.
