Surgical subspecialties and services are important components of the general surgical education. The majority of the program, and all of the fifth year, involve the following areas of General Surgery. During their training, residents rotate through the entire range of surgical subspecialties.
Colon and Rectal Surgery
The Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery provides the complete spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic services for diseases of the colon, rectum and anus.
Particular areas of expertise include sphincter salvage operations for rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, and simple and complex anorectal surgery.
Outpatient services include colorectal cancer screening, colonoscopy, evaluation of anorectal sphincter function, and enterostomal therapy. A multidisciplinary Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease involves specialists from Colon and Rectal Surgery as well as Gastroenterology.
An accredited training program in colon and rectal surgery, leading to board certification, is a part of the overall effort of this specialty. General surgery residents will take an active part in this discipline.

Surgical Critical Care
This multidisciplinary department has three physicians representing specialties in surgery, anesthesiology, and internal medicine/pulmonary medicine.
All staff have completed fellowships in surgical critical care medicine. The SICU rotation consists of daily bedside teaching, didactic lectures, and directed study to provide clinical experience in the care of the critically ill and injured patient. Residents will acquire the fundamental knowledge and technical skills necessary to diagnose and manage acute, life-threatening single-organ dysfunction as well as complex multisystem failure.
This department performs a broad variety of procedures in adult cardiac and general thoracic surgery, including myocardial revascularization, aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement, mediastinoscopy and thoracoscopy, and surgery of the thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta.
Residents receive rich experience in the treatment of benign and malignant conditions of the lung, pleura, chest wall, mediastinum, and esophagus as well as the AICD treatment of arrhythmias.
The general surgery resident has primary patient care responsibilities in the ICU, Stepdown Unit, and the regular patient care floors, and will be involved in both cardiac and general thoracic surgical procedures.

The Institute of Urology has eight board-certified urologists and an accredited residency program. In addition to the common forms of urologic disease, the department has expertise and major referral practices in the following areas: adrenal surgery, renovascular surgery, reconstructive urologic surgery, oncology, urodynamics and female incontinence, hemodialysis access surgery, renal transplantation, stone disease, sexual dysfunction, infertility, urethral stricture repair, and continent reservoir and neobladder construction. The department also has an active lithotripter and laser unit.
The general surgery resident is intimately involved in every aspect of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care.

The Department of Vascular Surgery provides care for the full range of vascular surgical disorders, including cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial occlusive, and aneurysmal disease. The vascular surgeons work closely with the medical vascular service and with the neurology department. Residents are integrally involved in preoperative, operative and postoperative inpatient care and in post-hospital follow-up. Residents learn preoperative evaluation and postoperative surveillance techniques in the outpatient clinic, and are encouraged to become involved in a clinical project leading to publication.

Liver and Transplant Program
At Lahey Clinic, we have a strong foundation for excellence in liver transplantation. Our Chief of Surgery, Roger L. Jenkins, MD, FACS, performed the first liver transplant in New England in July 1983. Since then, significant technological advancements in surgery, preoperative assessment and postoperative care have resulted in the ability to perform more complicated and innovative procedures safely.
Lahey is one of the nation's leading centers for adult liver transplants, and together with physicians at Children's Hospital Boston, we also perform a number of pediatric transplants. To date, our surgical teams have performed more than 1,000 liver transplants. Our liver transplant program holds one of the finest outcome records in the United States, with overall one-year patient survival of 91 percent.
Our multidisciplinary team of transplant surgeons, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, financial coordinators and others expertly provides fully coordinated pre- and post- transplant care. Throughout the entire transplant process, these health care professionals are with patients and their families every step of the way, providing medical care, emotional support, financial coordination and much more.
Our transplant surgeons are among the most experienced in the nation at performing live donor liver transplant (LDLT) surgeries. In fact, Lahey's Live Donor Liver Transplantation program is the third largest in the nation, with more than 100 such surgeries performed to date (September 2005). On the "Testimonials" section of our Web site, you can actually read the first-hand accounts of some patients who have undergone LDLT surgery at Lahey. In addition, the "Photo Gallery" page contains pictures of our surgeons performing simultaneous live donor liver/kidney transplant surgery. Lahey is the only medical center in the United States to have ever successfully performed this highly technical, multidisciplinary procedure (as of September 2005). Six such surgeries have been performed at Lahey to date.
