Mastitis, an infection of the breast tissue, occurs most often in women who are breastfeeding, although it can happen to anyone.
Breaks in the skin near the nipple allow bacteria to enter the breast duct, where the bacteria multiply and cause inflammation of the duct and redness of the skin. The inflamed cells release substances to fight the infection, but in turn also cause tissue swelling and increased blood flow.
Symptoms of mastitis include pain in the surrounding area and redness and warmth in the overlying breast skin. In most cases, mastitis is treated with antibiotics. If a breast abscess or a collection of pus forms, a simple surgical procedure may be necessary to drain the infected area.
Because mastitis and inflammatory breast cancer share some similar symptoms, it is important to talk to your doctor or Lahey health care provider if you are experiencing symptoms of mastitis.
