Hematologic Cancers (e.g., leukemia)

Overview

Patients with acute and chronic leukemia, Hodgkin's, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma and amyloidosis are diagnosed and treated by the hematologists of Lahey Clinic. Our team of hematologists works in close collaboration with physicians, nurses and technicians from a number of other clinical departments, using state-of-the-art techniques to provide the best in patient care.

Our hematologic cancer patients have the opportunity to participate in national clinical trials if they wish, and they also have access to unique, evidence-based clinical treatment pathways designed by Lahey hematologists.

Chemotherapy drugs are prepared in a dedicated hematology/oncology pharmacy. Nurses administering chemotherapy to our cancer patients are certified by the national Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and receive extensive specialized training at Lahey.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Some of the advanced techniques performed on-site for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with hematologic cancers include the following:

Diagnosis

  • Flow cytometry, a sophisticated technique for identifying cancer cells and making a precise diagnosis
  • Sophisticated CT, MRI and nuclear medicine studies for the accurate diagnosis and staging of patients' tumors
  • Molecular diagnostic studies for patients with coagulation factor mutations
  • Advanced blood cell antibody identification for certain patients with anemia and other similar blood problems

Treatment

  • Autologous stem cell transplantation for patients with certain malignancies
  • Stem cell processing and storage for patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplant
  • Apheresis (the removal of certain blood components such as plasma, white blood cells and platelets), an important treatment method for patients with leukemia, myeloproliferative disorders and other blood diseases, as well as for the removal of stem cells for transplantation
  • Special coagulation factor assays for patients with excessive bleeding or thrombosis
