Gynecological Cancers


Overview

Gynecologic oncology at Lahey involves screening, surgery, medical treatment, and continual follow-up for cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers. The Department of Gynecology works in collaboration with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and primary care physicians. Research interests include investigational use of CA-125 blood testing and pelvic ultrasound for early detection of ovarian cancer.

Our Services

Cervical Cancer

Screening and Diagnosis

  • Pelvic examination
  • ThinPrep Pap
  • Abnormal Pap tests automatically checked for human papilloma virus (HPV)

Evaluation

  • Colposcopy

Treatment

  • For precancerous disease (cervical dysplasia): removal of abnormal tissue by:
    • Freezing
    • Cauterization (burning)
    • Laser surgery
    • Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
  • For invasive cervical cancer:
    • Combination therapy, using chemotherapy and radiation
    • Hysterectomy
    • Radiation therapy

Endometrial Cancer

Diagnosis

  • Gynecologic evaluation of early symptoms (i.e., abnormal or post-menopausal bleeding)
  • Hysteroscopy

Treatment

  • Biopsy
  • Lymph node surgery
  • Hysterectomy: Surgical removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries

Ovarian Cancer

Screening and Diagnosis

  • CA-125 blood testing
  • Ovarian Cancer Risk Assessment Program
  • Pelvic examination
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Transvaginal ultrasound

Treatment

  • Oopherectomy: Surgical removal of the ovaries and other tissues
  • Post-surgical chemotherapy
  • Post-surgical radiation therapy
