A History of Innovation

From its establishment in Boston in 1923 as one of the first multispecialty clinics in the United States, Lahey Clinic has been an institution of innovation. Many of the clinical staff's contributions to medicine have advanced cancer treatment.

  • Lahey staff invented the first portable chemotherapy infusion pump for cancer patients.
  • The first successful right lung removal was performed on a lung cancer patient at Lahey Clinic.
  • Radiation oncologists at Lahey were pioneers in developing safe and effective techniques of radiation therapy for treatment of malignancies of the skin and other sites.
  • The Department of Urology worked to perfect the use of laser therapy to treat superficial bladder cancer.
  • In New England, Lahey pioneered the use of high-dose-rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer.
