Lipid Management

Overview of Lipid Problems

Lipids, or fats, are waxy substances that are a normal part of our diet and crucial for normal tissue growth and development. Cholesterol and triglycerides are the best known and most important lipids. Abnormal lipid concentrations in our blood play a central role in the development of an arterial disease called atherosclerosis, which may lead to heart attack, stroke and other medical problems.

The Lipid Clinic

Abnormal lipid levels are generally caused by poor diet, obesity, diabetes, inherited or genetic characteristics, or most commonly, a combination of these. Fortunately, we now have effective treatments-both diet and prescription drugs-for lipid abnormalities, which have helped reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.

In 1975, Lahey established the Lipid Clinic – one of the first in the country – where patients receive thorough evaluation and expert advice regarding management of their lipid abnormalities. At the Lipid Clinic, care is tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient, thus providing a vigorous approach to preventing future cardiac events from occurring.
