Obesity

Obesity is a national epidemic. Sixty million Americans struggle with this chronic, debilitating condition, and complications caused by obesity can be both dangerous and deadly.

Endocrinology - which explores the hormonal issues linked to obesity - is just one part of a comprehensive, multispecialty team at Lahey designed to help you take back your life and get your weight under control. Working alongside a knowledgeable and caring team of dietitians, psychologists, surgeons and other specialists, we customize solutions to meet the unique health and lifestyle needs of each individual patient. Treatment options allow you to choose what works best for you, be it a nonsurgical or surgical solution. Nonsurgical options include diet and exercise plans, prescription medications, counseling and behavior modification techniques through group classes. In certain situations, such as before surgery when a large amount of weight needs to be lost rapidly, low-calorie liquid diets may be prescribed.

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a proven technique for conquering morbid obesity that offers long-term, beneficial results for some patients. There is no "one-size-fits-all" solution when it comes to bariatric surgery. Each patient comes to Lahey with unique circumstances and personal preferences - all of which are taken into account when selecting the best surgical method. Fortunately, most patients are good candidates for laparoscopic or minimally invasive procedures that offer patients shorter hospital stays, less pain and faster recovery time.

After your surgery, we continue to provide you with personalized and attentive care, scheduling follow-up visits every other month for the first year and once per year thereafter. Lahey also offers a bariatric surgery support group to help patients who may be experiencing emotional or physical challenges after surgery. Contact 781-744-3044 for more information.
