Comprehensive History and Physical
Laboratory testing:
Health screening profile, including:
- Chemistry
- Hematology
- Thyroid profile
- Urinalysis
- Lipid profile
- Liver profile
- Homocysteine level
- PSA (men)
- Other, according to medical history
Cardiovascular Testing
- Electrocardiogram
- Exercise tolerance test (over 40 years of age, positive cardiac history)
- Stress echocardiogram (over 40 years of age, positive cardiac history)
- Cardiac scoring CT scan (imaging of coronary artery calcifications)
- Carotid duplex ultrasound
- Peripheral arterial study
Pulmonary Testing
- Chest X-ray (over 40 years of age, smoker)
- Chest CT Screening Scan (low-dose screening for patients over 40 years of age with a smoking history)
- Timed Vital Capacity (smokers only)
Colon Testing
- Colonoscopy (routine screening every 5 to 10 years for ages 50 and over, positive family history, positive previous personal history)
- Flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy (FFS) - (routine screening for ages 50 and over)
- Hemoccult testing (guaiac stool cards)
- Virtual colonoscopy (CT scan ages 50 and over; positive family history)
Visual Testing
Hearing Test (Over 40 years of age)
Specific Tests for Women:
- Papanicolaou Smear (Pap test)
- Mammography (over 40 years of age)
- Bone densitometry (baseline, post-menopausal)
- Pelvic ultrasound
- Breast ultrasound screen
Other:
- Whole body CT scan (chest, abdomen, pelvis)
- Abdominal/pelvic CT scan
- Abdominal ultrasound screening
Follow-Up
Following the physical exam and all related testing, the patient returns to the internist's office to review available test results and get the physician's recommendations for next steps. In addition, a summary letter with complete test results is mailed to the patient within two weeks of the examination.
