The staff members of the Department of General Internal Medicine (GIM) provide adults with continuing care in times of sickness and health. The Burlington GIM practice includes more than 50 board-certified general internists, resident physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

General Internal Medicine physicians and allied health professionals provide:
- Overall health care tailored to individual needs
- Periodic health examinations, including blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and cancer screenings
- Care for patients with medical problems ranging from high blood pressure to lower back pain to infectious diseases like colds and the flu
- Ongoing monitoring of chronic conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and emphysema, in collaboration with Lahey specialists
- Coordinated team care during hospitalizations
- Coordination of all services, including laboratory testing, imaging and specialty referrals
- Preventive care such as immunizations and health care counseling
The department-wide use of computerized information systems enhances the quality of care and increases patient safety by eliminating hand-written charts and prescriptions. The technology allows physicians and other care providers to record medical notes, access laboratory and radiology results, and order prescriptions electronically.
