Endoscopy Unit

Stephen J. Heller, MD
Director of Endoscopy

The Endoscopy Unit at Lahey Clinic provides comprehensive gastrointestinal endoscopic service to our patients. More than 14,000 procedures are performed annually. The unit is the setting for routine endoscopies such as colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening and polyp surveillance, upper endoscopy for the evaluation of ulcers and acid reflux disease and dilation of the esophagus for benign esophageal strictures. Additionally, we offer advanced endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for the evaluation and management of bile duct obstruction and gallstones, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal submucosal tumors and staging of esophageal cancer, treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding using the latest hemostatic techniques, and expandable stent placement for treatment of strictures of the esophagus, duodenum and colon. Our active esophageal motility laboratory performs esophageal manometry, and both catheter-based and Bravo-capsule based ambulatory esophageal pH monitoring.
