Open and easy access for patients who need diagnostic or screening endoscopic procedures augments primary care providers' ability to provide cost-effective and efficient care. As guidelines are put forth for practice standards in areas as diverse as the management of peptic ulcer disease in the age of Helicobacter pylori to the newest colorectal cancer screening recommendations, the primary care provider should have rapid and easy access to endoscopic procedures.
Our Endoscopy on Demand program allows the primary care physician direct access to diagnostic upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and urgent therapeutic procedures in both our Burlington and Peabody locations. The primary care physician is asked to complete a brief questionnaire and fax the information to the Lahey Clinic Endoscopy scheduling office at (781) 744-5479.
Patients will be notified of their appointments and provided with detailed informational brochures on what their particular procedure entails. The preparation instructions for the procedure will be mailed directly to the patient. Once the procedure is completed, the gastroenterologist who performed the procedure will contact the primary care provider by phone, fax, e-mail, or letter and will discuss the findings. For non-screening procedures, it is strongly suggested that the primary care provider arrange a return visit with the patient in order to discuss the endoscopy results.
