Treatment Approach and Options

Correcting any existing medical issue is the first line of defense in solving the problem. Perhaps changing an offending medication is the appropriate solution. If drug abuse is the source of the problem, interventions and strategies for stopping the abuse are necessary. In cases of male testosterone or female estrogen deficiencies, hormone therapy may be indicated. Sex therapy is also an important option for couples dealing with relationship difficulties or performance anxiety.

Depending on the underlying cause or causes, a variety of nonspecific treatments are available. Treatments may include oral tablets, vacuum pump therapy, penile injections or noninvasive intraurethral pellets. If all else fails, you may be referred to a Lahey urologist for penile implants.

New therapies are being researched and developed continually at Lahey and elsewhere.
