This is a group of blood vessel-invading infections produced by a class of fungi called zygomycetes. This disease is also sometimes referred to as mucormycosis. The most common species that cause disease are Absidia corymbifera, Rhizomucor pusillus and Rhizopus arrhizus. Infections generally develop rapidly in diabetics, malnourished patients, burn patients and otherwise immunosuppressed individuals. The site of infection is typically the sinuses, lungs, GI tract or skin. Due to their propensity to invade arteries, these fungi often cause significant tissue necrosis (death).
