Medical Evaluation

Patients considering live donor liver transplantation (LDLT) at Lahey must first be evaluated, accepted, and listed as an appropriate candidate for cadaveric liver transplant. A liver transplant evaluation begins with a referral letter from your local physician. Laboratory and ultrasound testing, along with some additional tests, will be performed when you come to Lahey for your transplant evaluation.

The transplant evaluation begins with a meeting between you and one of our liver transplant physicians. If it is the physician's opinion that you may be a suitable transplant candidate, then a more comprehensive two-day outpatient evaluation is scheduled. During this evaluation, you will undergo a variety of laboratory tests and meet with additional members of the transplant team.

If you are accepted and listed for a cadaveric liver transplant, then you must also be medically and surgically cleared as a candidate for LDLT. Medical clearance includes a physical, laboratory and radiological tests, and an assessment of your nutritional status and mobility.

It is possible that a liver transplant candidate may become too sick to receive LDLT. In that case, a cadaveric liver transplant may still be an option.
