Joint Replacement Surgery

William L. Healy, MD, and his surgical team wearing the special gowns, hoods and masks required during joint reconstruction surgery to minimize the risk of infection Joint replacement surgery is a center of excellence within Lahey's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Experienced, nationally recognized joint replacement surgeons are available to provide replacement of arthritic hips, knees, shoulders and ankles. Orthopaedic surgeons sub-specializing in the replacement of these joints are easily accessible for consultation.

More than 650 joint replacement operations are performed annually at Lahey Clinic. In addition, Boston University's Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Training Program sends residents to Lahey for training in joint replacement and other orthopaedic operations. Our joint replacement surgeons also participate in research and teaching activities regarding total joint arthroplasty.

Joint replacement surgery is an elective operation. All physicians affiliated with the Joint Replacement Surgery section at Lahey are well trained in other reconstructive alternatives beside arthroplasty for the treatment of arthritic joints. Before joint replacement is recommended, nonoperative and other surgical treatments are always explored in-depth. Furthermore, our joint replacement surgeons are experts in revision arthroplasty techniques such as Allograft, modular designs and custom prostheses, which may be required when primary total joint replacements fail.
