MR-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS)

MRgFUS is a revolutionary bloodless method that can be used to treat a variety of conditions. Our MRgFUS device is the ExAblate from InSightec, which was FDA approved to treat uterine fibroids in October 2004.

The procedure uses a highly focused beam of ultrasound as small as a pea or as large as a jellybean. This small area of targeted tissue is heated to 60 to 80 degrees Celsius, at which point the tissue coagulates and dies. The tissue along the beam path is not injured. The MRI is used to direct and control the treatment. The procedure is done under conscious sedation and takes three to four hours. Following treatment, patients are observed in a recovery area for two to three hours and typically go home the same day.

Most patients can return to their normal activities or work within one to two days following the procedure. This is in sharp contrast to most other forms of treatment for uterine fibroids, which require hospitalization and seven to 42 days of recovery. About five percent of patients treated with MRgFUS surgery have infections requiring antibiotics.
