Breast MRI is a noninvasive procedure that physicians can use to determine what the inside of the breast looks like. The detection of breast cancer can often be made through an MRI without subjecting the patient to the compression techniques of mammography or to unnecessary biopsies. The exam is done as you lie on your stomach with your head facing out of the magnet and your breasts gently compressed by imaging receivers. This procedure may require the injection of an intravenous contrast material called gadolinium.
If it becomes necessary, any lesions identified with MRI can be biopsied later under MR guidance.
