Lahey Clinic Designated Leapfrog Top Hospital
BURLINGTON, MA—Lahey Clinic is proud to be among only 33 U.S. adult-care hospitals named to the Leapfrog Top Hospitals list. Leapfrog is a coalition of employers whose mission is to promote health care quality and safety.
Inclusion on the list is based on results from 1,285 hospitals that chose to participate in the Leapfrog Hospital Quality and Safety Survey, a national rating system that provides an up-to-the-minute assessment of a hospital's quality and safety. Four other hospitals from Massachusetts also made the list.
“Lahey Clinic is proud to be named one of the country's top hospitals,” said Lahey Clinic President and Chief Executive Officer David M. Barrett, MD. “Lahey's placement on this coveted list is a testament to our ongoing efforts to always look for new and better ways to improve the quality and safety of care for our patients.”
The survey asks hospitals about their actions related to “Safe Practices for Better Healthcare” endorsed by the National Quality Forum, as well as other nationally accepted patient safety achievements. According to the Leapfrog Group, the Hospital Quality and Safety Survey is the only national survey that provides as full an assessment of a hospital's quality and safety.
The survey collects data from hospitals on their progress toward implementing practices in four categories:
- Computer physician order entry;
- Evidence-based hospital referral;
- Intensive care unit (ICU) staffing by physicians experienced in critical care medicine; and
- The Leapfrog Safe Practices Score, based on the National Quality Forum-endorsed safe practices that include 27 procedures to reduce preventable medical mistakes.
“We are determined to find and implement the latest medical technology,” said Lahey Clinic Chief Medical Officer Joseph C. Corkery, MD. “We know it will help us deliver the best medical care possible in the safest way available.”
