Spackman brings more than 25 years of local health care experience in public and private sectors

Burlington, Mass. – May 21, 2012 – The Lahey Health System (LHS) announced today the appointment of David G. Spackman, Esq., as General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Governmental Affairs.

“We are honored to have David join the Lahey Health System leadership team,” said LHS’ President and CEO, Howard Grant, JD, MD. “David will be responsible for oversight of all legal activities and governmental relations for the new Lahey Health System. In addition, given his extensive experience in system strategy and development, I know he will also be a valuable asset as LHS continues to grow.”

Mr. Spackman comes to LHS most recently from McDermott Will & Emery LLP, where he served as counsel and a member of McDermott’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group. A career health care M&A (mergers and acquisitions) lawyer by training, his practice there focused on corporate governance, executive compensation issues and conversion transactions.

From 2007 - 2011, Mr. Spackman served as Chief of the Division of Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities in the office of Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. In that role, he was responsible for protecting the public’s interest in over 22,000 public charities operating in Massachusetts by promoting transparency and ensuring enforcement of fiduciary standards of care and loyalty. He was actively involved in the Attorney General’s health care initiatives, contributing to identification of health care cost drivers, provider consolidation and policy development.

“I have been in this business for more than 25 years now,” said Mr. Spackman. “I have seen the health care industry go through many changes, but the changes happening today are more dramatic than anything I’ve witnessed before. The model that Lahey Clinic and Northeast Health System are building—a community-based health system that provides high-quality care at an affordable cost— is visionary and I am proud to be part of it.”
