Book Signing Event held on March 1 at Barnes & Noble in Burlington
Keith Stuart, MD, head of Oncology at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Burlington, Corrine Zarwan, MD, and the team at the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center are pleased to announce the publishing of The Lahey Clinic Guide to Cooking Through Cancer: 100+ Recipes for Treatment and Recovery to help patients choose recipes and meals that can help alleviate their symptoms and make coping with cancer easier.
“Cooking through Cancer was a project that many of us at the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Burlington, held close to our hearts,” said Dr. Stuart. “Cancer treatment is very tough on the body. The disease, along with the side effects of treatment, can make it extremely difficult for people to find foods that are palatable. We designed this book to help patients find good meals that they can enjoy together with their families during an otherwise difficult time.”
The book contains more than 100 healthy and delicious recipes that are organized by symptom and can be enjoyed by cancer patients, as well as their families. The recipes can help with a variety of cancer treatment side effects, such as sore mouth, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and weight gain and loss. The book also features a “celebrations” section, for those who have overcome their disease, or those who simply want to celebrate how far they have come in their treatment.
Each recipe in the book was tested and approved by Drs. Stuart and Zarwan, as well as a team of Oncology physicians, nurses and nutritionists. Readers can cook up everything from Mediterranean split pea soup (to help with sore mouth, constipation, and weight gain prevention) to roast pork loin with root vegetables (to help with constipation and nausea and vomiting). Many recipes combat several symptoms at once.
“The goal of the book is to help patients rediscover the enjoyment of good food that cancer frequently diminishes for them,” Dr. Stuart said. “While food will not cure cancer or radically change its course, it can certainly make treatments easier to weather.”
Drs. Stuart and Zarwan will be hosting a book signing event at the Barnes & Noble in Burlington, Mass., on March 1 to celebrate the launch of The Lahey Clinic Guide to Cooking Through Cancer. A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center, so stop by to pick up your signed copy and help support this cause.
