Richard Nesto, MD, named chair, Division of Internal Medicine at Lahey Clinic

BURLINGTON, MA—Richard W. Nesto, MD, has been named chair of the Division of Internal Medicine at Lahey Clinic, effective August 1.

Dr. Nesto joined the Lahey staff in 2000 as chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and has since served as a member of the Board of Trustees, the Lahey Clinic Strategy Subcommittee and the Physicians for Philanthropy Committee. As division chair, Dr. Nesto will serve on the Board of Governors and Clinical Leadership Council.

“Dr. Nesto is an immensely capable leader as attested during his years as the chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and his efforts in the development of regional outreach programs in cardiology,” said David M. Barrett, MD, president and chief executive officer. “We are asking Dr. Nesto to develop a strategy for the Division of Internal Medicine for the next 10 years.”

In his new position, Dr. Nesto replaces John Beamis, MD, who led the Division for the past 11 years.

Nesto received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester and fellowships in cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Nesto is globally recognized as an expert on heart disease in patients with diabetes and serves on numerous consensus panels evaluating treatment strategies for when these conditions coexist. He is currently a principal investigator and steering committee officer of several significant clinical trials, and is a founding member of the International Society of Diabetes and Vascular Disease. As an author of more than 275 scientific reports, abstracts and book chapters, his contributions have led to a wider appreciation that heart disease has unique features in patients with diabetes and that treatment in such patients requires a specialized approach.
