Reasons to Call a Chaplain


Patients and Families:

You may wish to call a chaplain if you need:

  • Emotional or spiritual support as you cope with your illness
  • Help with coping skills
  • Emotional or spiritual support as you cope with life concerns beyond your illness
  • Help in making meaning of your illness
  • To request a specific religious ritual
  • Someone to talk to safely and confidentially
  • Support as you anticipate surgery, when you have received bad news, or are grieving a loss
  • Help with end of life decisions

Staff:

You may wish to call a chaplain if you need:

  • Information on a patient's religious tradition in order to provide culturally competent care
  • Help with religious or ethical concerns about a patient, a family, or your work
  • To arrange a memorial service for a deceased colleague
  • Support as you deal with a personal or spiritual issue of your own
