Lahey's Cancer Center again awarded Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer

Pre-existing medical conditions may be exacerbated by air travel, Lahey Clinic study shows
Review appears in Lancet
Burlington, MA (February 23, 2009) -- Writing in the current issue of Lancet, Lahey Clinic Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine Mark A. Gendreau, MD, and former medical student, Danielle Silverman, MD, conclude that in-flight medical events are occurring more frequently because a growing number of people with pre-existing medical conditions are flying. The Lahey study also suggests that extended flight times of more modern aircraft may be subjecting passengers to environmental and physiological changes associated with flight, impacting their health.

Enhanced breast imaging offered in Massachusetts only at Lahey Clinic

Lahey Clinic named only Boston-area hospital on list of lowest heart attack mortality in U.S.
Burlington, MA (August 26, 2008) – The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released data on mortality rates for heart attacks, or acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by hospital, citing Lahey Clinic as having one of the best rates nationally. Lahey is the only Boston-area hospital to be named to the short list of nine hospitals that performed better than the national average.

Lahey Clinic prostate study shows current cancer grading system flawed
Burlington, MA (July 31, 2008) -- Physicians from Lahey Clinic, in the August issue of European Urology, have published a significant research study that questions the accuracy of the time-honored prostate cancer grading system, known as the Gleason score, used both in presurgical biopsy and prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) specimens.

Cancer Center granted highest approval rating with distinction from American College of Surgeons
Burlington, MA (July, 30, 2008) -- The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted Lahey Clinic's Sophia Gordon Cancer Center a three-year approval with commendation, following a rigorous evaluation process and an on-site visit in April by its physician reviewer. Lahey Clinic met all 36 standards of the Approvals Program and, in fact, received commendations in the nine specially focused standards -- a rarity for most cancer programs.

Lahey clinic to go tobacco free on Independence Day
Burlington, MA (July 2, 2008) – To promote a healthier environment for patients, visitors and colleagues, Lahey Clinic will kick off a 100 percent tobacco-free policy on Independence Day, joining hundreds of hospitals in the nation that have eliminated tobacco use on their campuses. Starting July 4, use of tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and pipe fill) will not be allowed on any Lahey Clinic property, both inside and outside, including entrances and walkways, leased buildings, and all parking facilities.

Lahey Clinic is one of four centers to implant device that aids weight loss and controls diabetes
Burlington, MA (June 18, 2008)--Physicians at Lahey Clinic are investigating the safety and efficacy of a new medical device, the EndoBarrier Gastrointestinal Liner, that may mimic the effects of gastric bypass surgery--including weight loss and control of type 2 diabetes--before any surgery takes place. There are only three other centers in the U.S. participating in this trial.

Lahey Clinic physician warns of danger from popular teen activity
Burlington, MA (June 17, 2008) -- An increasingly popular activity among school-aged children and teens can cause traumatic eye injury. The activity involves twisting and crushing an empty water bottle, with the cap loosened, until the cap flies off because of increased pressure. The force behind the cap may cause severe injury if it hits someone in the eye.

Lahey Cardiologist Authors Major Study Evaluating Cardiac Safety of Controversial Diabetes Drugs
BURLINGTON, MA--Dr. Richard W. Nesto, chair, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Lahey Clinic, is the lead author of a major study published in this week's edition of The Lancet that examines the cardiovascular safety of pioglitazone (Actos) and the controversial drug darosiglitazone (Avandia), which has been under scrutiny because of reported side effects. Dr. Nesto's team studied the risk for congestive heart failure (CHF) and death from cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes who were taking these drugs. These medications, known as TZDs, are effective in controlling sugar levels in diabetic patients but are known to cause weight gain and fluid retention in a small percentage of patients.

BURLINGTON – Sixty-five-year-old Dan Devlin credits the staff at Lahey Clinic with saving his life twice: once in 1995, with coronary bypass surgery, and again in 1998, helping him recover from pneumonia. Both times he entered the Clinic through the emergency department. Now retired from Hewlett-Packard, the Wakefield resident is in the process of “giving back” to Lahey by volunteering his time and talents 15 hours a week in that same emergency department.
