New Graduate Nurse Orientation Program

Description

The goals of this program are to facilitate the graduate nurses’ knowledge base, increase their nursing skills, and assist them with a practical clinical precepted experience. Emphasis is placed on documentation, skill performance, physical assessment, care of patients with specific health issues, and interaction with members of the Lahey Clinic health care team.

Graduate nurses newly hired to Lahey Clinic

Prerequisites

Graduate nurses newly hired to Lahey Clinic who have successfully passed the NCLEX State Board, are waiting for the results or will be taking the NCLEX in the near future.

This program is a four-week program (five days per week) that includes studies in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of each body system including: system overview, diseases, diagnostic testing, specialties and medical terminology
  • Customer service
  • Patient education
  • Communication skills
  • Hands on use of Lahey Clinic computer systems
  • Hands on vital signs
  • Infection control
  • Sterile technique
  • Specimen processing
  • Medical record/documentation

Prerequisites

An interest in the medical field and change in profession.

Intended audience

This program is intended to lay an initial foundation for employees new to the medical field, resulting in staff retention and satisfaction.

Code on the Road

Description

The Code on the Road is a mobile class where nurses demonstrate their role in a simulated code. Educators move from floor to floor with all equipment and a mannequin. This class will include:

  • Two reasons to call a "Code"
  • Who does what, how to call "The Code", who responds
  • What is always done (ie: cardiac board placed, CPR begins, monitor patient, set up suction, oxygen, set up defibrillator)
  • Establish roles (ie: runner, responder, recorder)
  • Become familiar with doses of most frequent drugs used in initial stages
  • How to communicate changes in patients condition
  • How to evaluate "The Code"

Intended Audience

This course is appropriate for all staff nurses at Lahey Clinic. This is to help relieve stress about the actual roll of new and experienced RNs.

Skills Fair

Description

The Nursing Skills Fair is held at least two times per year. The skills stations include: airway, cardioversion, central line dressing, pleurevac, defibrillator, correct placement of the EKG leads, use of the external pacemaker, procedure for testing occult blood, set up of Ultrabag for peritoneal dialysis, routine tracheostomy care and indicators for ventriculostomy drain including set-up.

All Lahey Clinic nursing staff

Intended audiences

To provide an opportunity for nursing staff on all three shifts to demonstrate their mandatory competencies relative to their job description.

Nursing Research Series

The Nursing Research Series is an informal seminar intended as a forum for nurse researchers to share their experiences in completing their studies. Researchers are asked to talk about why they chose their area of interest, how they went about studying their topic, including both pitfalls and successes, and research findings.

Managing a Patient Crisis in the Medical-Surgical Environment

The preceptor workshop is a one-day session designed to help new and experienced preceptors develop the skills needed to be an effective preceptor for new staff members. Topics in the workshop include:

  • Providing feedback to orientee
  • Evaluating clinical performance

Intended audience

This workshop is intended for any Lahey staff member who will be acting as a preceptor for new or transferring staff members. The workshop is open to RNs, LPNs, nursing and clinic assistants, unit coordinators and others who will be acting in the role of preceptor.

Tertiary Care Team Leader

Emergency Dept. Triage Course

Description

The Emergency Department Triage Course is a two-day program meant to assist the Emergency Department nurse in the development/refinement of the skills and knowledge needed to function effectively in the triage nurse role. Specific topics include:

  • Evolution of triage
  • Emergency Department triage systems
  • The triage process
  • Triage categories
  • Stressors of triage
  • Legal/social issue at triage
  • System based triage protocols

Intended audience

This program is intended for Emergency Department nurses who have completed a minimum of six months of emergency nursing and demonstrated mastery of the Emergency Department CBO.

Prerequisites

The nurse must have the following certifications: BCLS, ACLS, PALS and TNCC.

Critical Care Course

Description

The critical care course is a five-day series covering basic theories fundamental to critical care nursing. The topics include:

  • Acute cardiac nursing
  • Hemodynamics
  • Respiratory nursing care
  • Pharmacological intervention
  • Care of the patient with neurological problems

Each day may be taken as a single module or the series may be taken in its entirety. Requirements for each day include preparatory reading and self-assessment before and after attendance.

Day 1 – Acute cardiac nursing covers anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system, cardiovascular assessment, non-invasive and invasive diagnostic procedures, coronary artery disease, lumen restoration, and classification of rhythm disorders.

Day 2 – Hemodynamics class covers basic information related to the physiology of hemodynamics and includes use of Swan-Ganz catheters, nursing care of patients requiring Swan-Ganz catheter insertion and maintenance, and interpretation of wave forms and pressure readings.

Day 3:  Respiratory nursing care covers anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, respiratory assessment, nursing care of patients with respiratory compromise, and care of the patient requiring mechanical ventilation.

Day 4:  Pharmacologic intervention covers information related to drugs used in critical care settings, including indications, dose ranges, expected outcomes, and untoward effects. Calculation of IV drip rates is included.

Day 5:  Care of the patient with neurological problems covers neurological assessment, interventions for specific neurological syndromes, and medications used to treat neurological compromise.

Intended audience

Successful completion of this program is required for nurses who are orienting to a critical care unit. Nurses who work in other than critical care areas may wish to attend one or more days to advance their knowledge of particular topics.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmias (or demonstrated competency) is required.

Trauma Nursing Core Course (for Lahey staff only)

Description

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is a two-day program that provides core-level knowledge, both in terms of cognitive and psychomotor skills, based on the six-phase trauma nursing process as the standard of nursing care. Since 1986, TNCC has served as the standard of practice for providing trauma nursing care to patients who have sustained injuries induced by all mechanisms.

The course topics include::

  • Epidemiology of trauma
  • Biomechanics and mechanisms of injury
  • Initial assessment
  • Trauma assessment by system
  • Trauma in special populations: pediatric, geriatric and pregnancy
  • Psychosocial aspects of trauma

Intended audience

TNCC is intended for the nurse with a minimum of six months of emergency nursing experience. The course provides current, standardized information specific for emergency nurses who are essential members of a trauma team.

Six months of emergency nursing

Perioperative Nursing Course

This 12-week course is designed to facilitate the development of the knowledge base and skills needed to be a competent perioperative nurse. The course includes 25 modules of didactic information; 20 hours of "hands-on" practice and simulation in a lab setting; and more than 300 hours of practical clinical preceptor experience.

Intended Audience

Nurses interested in perioperative nursing as a specialty.

Prerequisites

Participants must purchase the required course textbooks and be committed to the didactic, lab and clinical components of the course.
