This course is the third phase of nursing orientation during
weeks six through 12. The Oncology Nursing Basics Course is a unit-based program consisting of four three-hour sessions intended to help a novice nurse manage the care of a variety of cancer patients. Specific topics include:
- The Cancer Problem
- Cancer cell biology
- Introduction to Cancer Treatment Modalities
- Treatment / Disease Related Problems
- Discharge Planning
- Finding Hope and Meaning
- Caring for Yourself and Your Colleagues
- Field Trips: Hematology/Oncology Clinic, Radiation Therapy and Tumor Board Conference
Intended audience
This series is intended for new graduate nurses, new hires
or transfer nurses who need a review of basic oncology nursing concepts.

Oncology Nursing
Certification Review Course
Description
This course is offered at least annually to qualified nurses. The course is designed to help nurses prepare for the national Oncology Nursing Society’s Oncology Certification Examination (OCN). The course consists of four four-hour sessions. Specific topics include:
- Epidemiology / Carcinogenesis / Tumor Growth Kinetics
- Pathophysiology / Diagnosis / Staging
- Advanced Concepts in Cancer Treatment
- Radiosensitizers / Protectants
- Bone Marrow Transplant (Autologous / Allogeneic)
- Biotherapy
- Oncologic Emergencies / Quality of Life Issues
- Professional Performance
Intended Audience
This course is pertinent to RNs who wish to enrich their
knowledge cancer patients and their responses to disease and treatment. Candidates should currently be working with oncology patients and have at least two years of medical/surgical nursing experience.
Prerequisites
Oncology Nursing Basics Course or permission from
instructor. (Please note that a requirement of the OCN exam is a minimum of 1,000 hours of oncology practice within 2.5 years prior to submitting application.)

Description
This course is offered at least annually to qualified
nurses. This is an intensive, two-day course (16.2 contact hours) that will focus on the theoretical knowledge base needed to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy utilizing. Upon successful completion of the course and post-test, participants will receive a personalized ONS Chemotherapy Provider Card. Specific topics include:
- Drug classification
- Administration techniques
- Safe handling
- Management of side effects
- Patient teaching strategies
- Standards of practice
Intended Audience
RN’s who have been employed in an oncology setting for at
least six months.

Initial Basic Cardiac Life Support
Description
This eight-hour course, offered in two four-hour segments, is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages or who are required to take a Health Care Provider Course for employment. Specific topics include:
- Overview of the chain of survival
- Recognition of the signs of heart attack, cardiac
arrest, stroke and choking
- The skills of CPR performance (cardiopulmonary
resuscitation)
- Mouth to mask and bag-mask ventilation
- Use of automated external defibrillators
- Relief of foreign body airway obstruction for the
responsive and unresponsive victim
- Completion of written examination and skills

Intended audience
Individuals who provide health care to patients in a wide
variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings including (but not limited to) nurses, respiratory therapists, medical or nursing assistants, physical or occupational therapists, physicians, paramedics, EMTs and other allied health personnel. This course is designed for anyone who is required to take a Health Care Provider Course for employment. This is a prerequisite for AHA advanced courses in resuscitation, including Advanced
Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Life Support (PALS) and BLS Instructor Courses.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for taking this course. No previous CPR experience is necessary.

needing to recertify.
Intended audience
All nurses must complete re-certification every two years.

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Instructor Course
Description
This two-day session, given in 2 to 8 hour segments, is intended to provide certification as a Basic Cardiac Life Support Instructor through the American Heart Association (AHA). Specific topics include:
- Teaching and learning strategies
- Review of BLS science
- The revolution in AHA courses
- Master skills demonstration and discussion of performance
- Principles of written examination and practical evaluation
- Principles of remedial instruction
- Mannequin maintenance and decontamination
Intended audience
This course is intended for health care professionals who maintain current certification as a Health Care Provider and who are highly motivated to teach the skills of BCLS. The BCLS instructor must teach at least four courses in a two-year period and must follow the AHA Guidelines and Curricula in conducting courses that issue AHA course completion cards.
Prerequisites
Candidates must be currently certified as an AHA Health Care Provider and must demonstrate instructor potential and be motivated to teach. The candidate should bring a high level of enthusiasm and performance skills to the course.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Description
Advanced cardiac life support is offered four times per year for Lahey Clinic staff, including nurses, physicians, and other health care workers.
Intended audience
Nurses working in acute care areas are expected to maintain ACLS certification
Prerequisites
Candidates must have completed the basic dysrhythmia course (or demonstrated competence) and demonstrated competence in critical care nursing. Participants must be familiar with the contents of the ACLS manual and the algorithms.

Description

Description
Pathways to Expertise – Telemetry follows the morning program of Basic Dysrhythmia Recognition and consists of 3 afternoon classes intended to help a beginning critical care/telemetry nurse manage the care of a variety of telemetry patients. Specific topics include:
- Care of the patient with cardiac disease including MI,
CHF, ACS
- Care of the general surgery/telemetry patient
- Care of the pre- and post-op Cath patient and CABG
- The devices of cardiology including pacemakers and ICDs
- The use of cardiac IV drip medications and a
calculation review
Intended audience
This series is intended for nurses who are interested in learning more about the use of telemetry and the patient population on telemetry. Completion of a series of self-study modules is required for nurses working in telemetry units.

Description
This is a four-hour workshop providing didactic information and practice with the devices of temporary pacemaking. Cardiac electrophysiology and anatomy will be reviewed as they apply to temporary pacing. Pacing modes, rates, thresholds, sensitivities and system troubleshooting will be discussed. The most commonly used pacing devices will be available for "hands-on" practice and simulation.

Description
Provides the experienced telemetry nurse with a forum to discuss acute 12 lead EKG interpretation, pre-excitation syndromes, arterial blood gas analysis, temporary pacing and cardiac drip pharmacology through actual case scenarios.

Prerequisites
Because of the course content and pace, fluency in basic dysrhythmia interpretation, current BCLS and ACLS, and at least one year of telemetry experience are required.
Objectives
The learner will be able to:
- Describe the 12 lead EKG changes that occur with cardiac ischemia, injury and infarction
- Describe how the leads of the 12 lead EKG correlate with cardiac anatomy and coronary vasculature
- List the identifying components of LGL, WPW, RAH, LAH and LVH
- Explain how repiratory and metabolic changes can be assessed by interpreting arterial blood gas results
- List the indications and types of temporary pacemaking devices, and state safety-related precautions
- Describe the indications, action, dosing and nursing considerations for selected cardiac drip medications
