5 West Hospital is a 36-bed medical telemetry unit with close ties to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, Emergency Room, and Coronary Care Unit. The population includes patients undergoing coronary intervention and electrophysiological procedures, as well as patients

6 West Hospital
6 West Hospital is a 22-bed medical-surgical telemetry unit with close ties to the 6 West Intermediate Care Unit and Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). The primary patient population consists of medical patients requiring cardiac monitoring such as acute coronary syndrome, CHF and pulmonary patients. The secondary patient population includes those post-surgical
patients who have experienced a cardiac event and require close telemetry monitoring. 6 West is a true example of the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team
6 East Hospital
The nursing staff on the 6 East Hospital unit care for a diverse patient population in their dynamic 24-bed telemetry unit. The majority of patients have had cardiac or vascular surgery, and the nurses enjoy a collegiality among different groups of physicians, PAs, and NPs. The 6 East
Hospital unit provides nurses with strong telemetry experience and the support and encouragement needed to enhance their skills.
6 Central Hospital
6 Central Hospital is a 35-bed general medical-surgical unit specializing in end-stage liver disease, hepatobiliary surgery, and liver transplantation. The nursing staff plays an integral role in the education, emotional support, and complex medical care of this patient population. The 6
Central nurses enjoy active collaboration with a variety of multidisciplinary services, namely the well-respected liver transplant team. This unit is a rewarding, yet busy, acute care setting.
7 East Hospital
The nurses on the 7 East Hospital unit are part of a multidisciplinary continuum of care for adult patients in their 30-bed medical-surgical unit. The primary patient population has renal, urological or colon and rectal disorders. Other specialties include patients receiving brachytherapy or high-dose radiation, and those with gastroenterological disorders. Nurses on 7 East also care for patients undergoing kidney transplantation, bariatric surgery and postoperative care of the living-related donor.
7 Central Hospital
The 7 Central Hospital unit is a 38-bed medical surgical unit providing care to a wide range of adult patients and an occasional pediatric patient. The nurses on 7 Central enjoy caring for a diverse patient population from the areas of general surgery, neurology, neurosurgery,
orthopaedics, plastic surgery and trauma. 7 Central nurses thrive in an atmosphere of rapid patient turnover to provide a multidisciplinary approach to patient care
7 West Hospital
Nurses on the 7 West Hospital unit care for a variety of patients in a 35-bed setting, with particular emphasis on hematology and medical oncology. In addition, this unit contains autologous stem cell transplant suites. 7 West nurses also care for general medical patients and
various postoperative patients. Services provided to patients on this unit include intravenous chemotherapy administration, management of complex chemotherapy-related toxicities, management of oncologic emergencies, telemetry monitoring and seizure monitoring. Patient support may also include cancer pain management and emotional support for the patient and his or her family.
6 West Intermediate Care Unit
The nine-bed Intermediate Care Unit located on 6 West admits patients from all services requiring a higher level of patient care than on a medical-surgical unit, but less than in the standard "intensive" care unit. The patient-to-nurse ratio is between 2:1 and 3:1. An acute care area, 6 West has monitoring capabilities that include ECG and arterial and intracranial pressure
monitoring. Nurses enjoy the opportunity to work with a diverse population that includes postoperative patients from all services and medical patients with neurologic, endocrine or pulmonary disorders.
6 East Intermediate Care Unit
The 6 East Intermediate Care Unit is a six-bed acute care area specializing in the care of postoperative cardiothoracic and vascular surgery patients. Monitoring capabilities include ECG and arterial and pulmonary artery catheter. 6 East Intermediate Care Unit nurses provide focused
bedside care while maintaining a patient-to-nurse ratio of 2:1.
Surgical Intensive Care Unit/Cardiothoracic Post-Anesthesia Care Unit
(SICU/CT PACU)
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a 12-bed acute intensive care area specializing in the care of patients following major trauma, postoperative multi-system failure and liver or kidney transplants. The experienced and highly skilled nurses in the SICU also provide care to patients following surgery in the Cardiothoracic Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (CT PACU). The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:1 or 2:1 throughout all shifts. Using the latest technologies, nursing staff provide care to patients requiring ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring,
ICP monitoring, CRRT, IABP and BIVADS, in addition to providing support and comfort to the families of these patients.
Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
The Medical Intensive Care Unit is an eight-bed acute care area. Highly trained nurses care
primarily for medical patients requiring ventilatory support and ECG monitoring. Additionally, patients may require hemodynamic monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, and/or CVVH. The MICU patient population also includes patients receiving TPA for stroke and patients with hepatic-renal failure. Working together with the pulmonary team, nurses maintain extensive critical care skills and provide a supportive atmosphere for each other, the patients, and the patients' families.
Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
In this eight-bed acute care area, critical care nurses specialize in the care of patients with cardiac disorders. CCU nurses are an integral part of medical, surgical and interventional cardiology teams. Patients in the CCU may require ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring,
and/or an IABP. The CCU population includes patients with threatened and acute MI, post-interventional procedures (e.g., stents, angioplasty) and failed thrombolytic therapy. CCU nurses are adept at titrating a multitude of drips and are keen observers of minute
changes in their patients' cardiac status.
Nurses working in the 20-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) maintain excellent critical care skills and enjoy a strong collaborative practice with anesthesiologists and surgeons. PACU nurses are adept at hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive drug titration and ventilatory support. The PACU is a busy critical care area that adheres to ASPAN standards.
Operating Room
Lahey Clinic Medical Center has 20 operating rooms—including two state-of-the-art minimally invasive operating suites—that provide all patients with surgical care, for both
scheduled cases and emergency situations. Procedures range from simple outpatient surgeries to highly complex procedures such as CABG, liver transplantation and bariatric surgery. Our OR nurses strive to provide patients and their families with compassion, support and professional care.
Cardiac Catheterization Lab
The Cardiac Catheterization Lab performs more than 5,000 diagnostic and interventional procedures on patients with cardiovascular conditions. These procedures include drug eluting stent placement, angioplasty, rotablator, heart catheterization, and repair of congenital conditions. Using
the latest technologies, the nursing and technical staff provide high-quality care to both elective patients and critically ill patients requiring life support. The staff enjoys a fast-paced environment that challenges them to keep current with ever-advancing technology and procedures.
Electrophysiology Lab
The Electrophysiology Lab performs more than 1,200 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures annually. These procedures include pacemaker and biventricular device implantation, internal defibrillator implantation, electrophysiology studies, radiofrequency ablation and device explants. The nursing and technical staff provide high-quality care in an intense environment. Staff members enjoy the
challenge of remaining current on the latest advances and technology offered in the electrophysiology setting
Special Procedures
The Special Procedures section at Lahey consists of two procedure rooms in the Diagnostic Radiology Department. Special Procedures staff specialize in the care of the patient requiring interventional radiology procedures, including angiographies with intervention (including stenting and balloon dilatations), biliary interventions, abscess drainages and biopsies.
The nursing staff in this fast-paced environment specialize in the delivery of procedural sedation and close monitoring of patients in need of support during their procedures
Interventional Neurology
The Interventional Neurology suite specializes in the care of patients who require invasive neurological interventions. Procedures include angiography and stenting of cerebral vasculature, embolization of aneurysms and AVMs, and vertebroplasties of the spine. With state-of-the-art equipment, the nurses in this area assist with procedures while intensely monitoring the
patient. The staff are well-versed in neuroanatomy and provide the patient with care that is focused, effective and compassionate.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy nurses provide care to inpatients and outpatients requiring gastrointestinal procedures. The patient population served by Endoscopy ranges from adolescents
through geriatric patients. The Endoscopy service provides optimum assistance to physicians in maintaining diagnostic, preventive and restorative health needs for the patient. The staff provides conscientious, cost-effective and competent care with respect for life and dignity at every
stage of the human experience. Procedures include colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound,
ERCP and motility studies.
Ambulatory Surgery
The Ambulatory Surgery Department at Lahey consists of two units, Preadmission Testing and Ambulatory Surgery.
The Preadmission Testing unit is responsible for properly screening all patients scheduled for same-day surgery. This includes conducting preoperative interviews with patients and acquiring all required testing, in accordance with the Anesthesia Department's guidelines.
The Ambulatory Surgery unit is responsible for all surgical and outpatient procedures performed on patients who are admitted, treated and sent home in the same day.
Surgical specialties include laparoscopic surgery, general surgery, urology, vascular surgery, gynecological surgery, colon and rectal surgery, orthopaedics, otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery.
Outpatient procedures include cardioversions, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, radiology special procedures, interventional pain procedures and neurointerventional procedures.
Nurses in this fast-paced unit must be skilled and knowledgeable about surgery, anesthesia and related nursing interventions. Given the short time the patient spends in this setting, the staff must be capable of providing care that is focused and productive in preparing,
educating and assessing same-day surgical patients
The IV Infusion Room is an outpatient unit located on 2 West. The nurses in this area are dedicated to providing drug infusion therapy to a diverse population of outpatients. Types of infusions include blood transfusions, IV hydration, IV antibiotic therapy, IV immune therapy, secretin testing and IV iron therapy. The staff are also responsible for the preparation
of cardiac catheterization, electrophysiologic and interventional pain patients. Even though their day is very hectic, the nursing staff provide diligent care in an especially pleasant and relaxed
style.
IV Therapy Team
IV Therapy is a team of nurses dedicated to providing only the highest standard of care. They are
responsible for the start, restart and troubleshooting of peripheral IVs, accessing and de-accessing of implanted devices and blood transfusions on medical-surgical units. IV nurses are also responsible for the insertion of peripheral inserted central catheters. The IV team is available for all patients—both inpatient and outpatient—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Rapid Response Nursing is a team of skilled critical care nurses available 24 hours a day to assist other members of the nursing team with the management of acutely ill or trauma patients in any setting throughout the hospital. Members of the team are certified in trauma and pediatric and adult advanced life support, and are also skilled in patient assessment, hemodynamic, cardiac and intracranial monitoring.
Emergency Department
Located on 2 West, this busy Level II trauma service sees 38,500 patients annually and is responsible for 8,400 admissions, or 50 percent of the hospital's total admissions each year. The department consists of 22 beds, and includes a Minor Emergency section to expedite non-emergent cases. The experienced and highly skilled nursing staff is certified in trauma as well as adult and pediatric advanced life support; extensive training is also offered regarding the triage process. Nurses enjoy a challenging, fast-paced work environment that includes an ever-changing, diverse patient population.
