Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore (Peabody, Mass.)


Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is located on the second level of Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore, and consists of 10 beds. Currently, patient volume is 17,500 annually and growing. This area generates inpatient admissions to both Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore, and Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass. The nursing staff are certified in adult and pediatric advanced life support, and many staff members have also been certified in trauma care. Additionally, training is provided to the staff regarding the triage process. Nurses enjoy a fast-paced working environment that offers the challenge of an ever-changing, diverse patient population.

Inpatient Unit

Inpatient nurse educating a patient about his medical condition The Inpatient Unit is an eight-bed medical-surgical telemetry unit. This unit admits patients from the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Surgery and the ambulatory clinics. The patient population includes patients with a wide variety of medical conditions, but the primary focus is on cardiac, pulmonary and neurological disorders. Additionally, the surgical patient population includes patients who have had general, orthopaedic, ophthalmologic, plastic and urologic surgical intervention. Given the diverse patient population, staff members enjoy the opportunity and challenge of addressing the needs of patients from a number of services.

Special Care Unit

The Special Care Unit is a two-bed acute care area. The environment has equipment that can address the needs of a patient regarding ventilatory support, ECG monitoring, and hemodynamic monitoring. Patients in this area usually have a very short-term stay (stabilization period) before they are transferred to the Burlington campus, where more specialty services are located. The unit is also utilized to accommodate overflow volume from the Inpatient Unit.

Operating Room

There are currently five operating room suites at Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore, that provide all patients with surgical care, for both scheduled cases and emergency situations. Patients in need of highly complex surgery (e.g., CABG, liver transplantation), however, are typically operated on at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., where there are 20 additional operating rooms, including two state-of-the-art minimally invasive operating suites. Our OR nurses strive to provide patients and their families with compassion, support and professional care.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy nurses provide care to inpatients and outpatients requiring gastrointestinal procedures. The patient population served by Endoscopy ranges from adolescents through geriatric patients. The Endoscopy service provides optimum assistance to physicians in maintaining diagnostic, preventive and restorative health needs for the patient. The staff provides conscientious, cost-effective and competent care with respect for life and dignity at every stage of the human experience. Procedures include colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP and motility studies.
