The strength of the cardiovascular training program at Lahey Clinic is in the wealth and diversity of clinical material encountered during training.
The spectrum of diseases encountered, ranging from the uncomplicated presentation of a patient entering the system via the emergency room to the complicated patient transferred for a tertiary care intervention, provides a proper and unique balance in a trainee's exposure to cardiac conditions.
The high volume of clinical material per trainee encountered in the clinical and laboratory rotations ensures that the trainee is exposed to an extremely broad range of common and uncommon disease entities. The presence of ancillary staff (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) ensures that service obligations per trainee is not excessive, despite high volume. The high ratio of attending physicians to cardiovascular fellows provides for strong supervision and individual attention, allowing fellows to develop a high degree of expertise in cardiovascular medicine and a technical proficiency in the various cardiovascular procedures.

Program Summary
The Cardiovascular Fellowship Training Program at Lahey Clinic is an ACGME-accredited program that is three years in duration. It is designed to provide the trainee with comprehensive subspecialty training through direct exposure, formal instruction, and broad clinical experience necessary to acquiring knowledge and skills in the management of adult cardiovascular diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
There is a core group of seven cardiovascular fellowship trainees, as well as a number of dedicated specialty fellows in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology. The rotation schedule is designed to allow for a balanced exposure to the various facets of cardiovascular disease specialties.
The bulk of the training is at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. Fellows rotate for a one-month elective during the second year to gain focused experience in management of adults with congenital heart disease. A one-month elective in cardiac transplantation is offered during the third year of training.
The educational curriculum ensures balanced exposure to the various disciplines in cardiovascular medicine. The rotation schedule in the first two years is structured according to the nationally recommended guidelines. The third-year schedule is more flexible and is tailored to the interests of the trainee with electives in vascular medicine, cardiac transplantation, and research, as well as additional rotations in invasive, noninvasive, and electrophysiology to match the career goals of the trainee.
