History of Anesthesia in Group Practice

In 1923, renowned surgeon Frank Howard Lahey, MD, founded a comprehensive clinic “complete in every detail for the care and cure of the sick.” A novel idea at the time, this private practice brought together different specialists under one roof, including anesthesiologist Lincoln F. Sise, MD.

Dr. Lahey believed in this group care model and that his small clinic would become a center for research and learning. This surgical practice became the first Lahey Clinic.

Dr. Sise became a significant contributor to the emerging field of anesthesiology. During the infancy of this specialty, he was a visionary champion of anesthesia safety, regional anesthesia, perioperative medicine and anesthesia education.

Lahey maintains this strong focus on innovation and collaboration. Throughout Lahey’s growth, this multi-specialty group practice model has remained. With a thriving collegial culture, we recognize the extensive benefits of teamwork.
