Residency and Fellowship Opportunities

Our residency and fellowship programs are located in Burlington, Massachusetts, approximately 17 miles northwest of Boston.
About Our Residencies & Fellowships
- You must have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 in order to be eligible for a medical license in Massachusetts (see below).
- You must have a currently valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
- You must be eligible for a J-1 visa issued by ECFMG.
- Some programs require that you have previous training in the United States or three letters of recommendation from US clinical rotations; please check with the specialty in which you are interested for their residency or fellowship program requirements. The Internal Medicine Residency Program requires three letters of recommendation from US clinical rotations.

It is your responsibility to make sure you pass USMLE Steps 1 and 2 to be in compliance with Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine requirements.

Limited Licensure For International Medical School Graduates
According to M.G.L.c.112, § 9, the Board may issue a limited license to an international medical graduate who, among other qualifications, holds a standard certificate granted after an examination by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Effective July 1, 1997, the Board of Registration in Medicine will consider issuing initial limited licenses only to those international medical graduates who have obtained an ECFMG certificate by passing USMLE Steps 1 and 2. However, the Board will continue to consider issuing limited license renewals and change of program limited licenses to those individuals who obtain initial limited licensure in the Commonwealth prior to July 1, 1997.
Visas Offered to Graduates of International Medical Schools
You must qualify for a J-1 visa from the ECFMG and have a valid ECFMG certificate in order to be eligible for graduate medical education training at Lahey.
We do not sponsor residents or fellows for H1 visas but will work with ECFMG to assist you in obtaining a J-1 exchange visitor visa for the duration of your training in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship training program.
Please note: J-1 visas may not be accepted in all cases and are subject to the specific residency or fellowship program. For further information, please refer to the application requirements for the program of interest.
