You have your own health history. Talk with your doctor about your risk factors and background with asthma. By talking openly and often with your doctor, you can take an active role in your care.

Here are some tips that will make it easier for you to talk to your doctor:

  • Bring someone with you. It helps to have another person hear what is said and think of questions to ask.
  • Write down your questions so do you do not forget them.
  • Write down the answers you get and make sure you understand what you are hearing. Ask for help if you need it.
  • Do not be afraid to ask your questions or ask where you can find more information. You have a right to know.
  • Why do I have this problem?
  • Is there genetic link?
  • What other health problems could cause the same symptoms?
  • How do you make the diagnosis?
  • What are the pros and cons of surgery? Medicines?
  • What type of surgery is right for me?
  • How long does it take for the medicine to work?
  • Will I still be in pain even after I start the medicine?
  • How long will I be out of work if I have surgery?
  • What are the chances of the gallstones coming back after surgery?
  • What are the chances of the gallstones coming back if I take medicines?
  • How long before I feel better if I use the other treatments?
  • Should I change my diet? If so, how?
  • Can you refer me to a registered dietitian to help me make changes?
  • Will I be able to eat fatty foods again?
  • Will changing my diet lower my risk of getting gallstones again after they have been treated?
  • How can I lose weight safely?
  • What exercises should I do?
  • Are there any alternative treatments I can try?
