These steps can help lower the risk of PAD.

Do Not Smoke

Chemicals in smoke cause plaque to build up in the arteries. This raises the risk of atherosclerosis. Smoking can also cause changes in blood vessels that make it harder for blood to flow.

People who smoke should talk to their doctors about ways to quit . Secondhand smoke should also be avoided.

Eat a Healthful Diet

Eating a healthful diet can help manage cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It should include plenty of whole grains , fruits and vegetables, fish, and nuts. It should also contain healthy fats like avocados instead of unhealthy ones like fried foods.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise can help keep blood vessels healthy and promote good blood flow. It can also help strengthen the heart and lower blood pressure. Adults should aim for 30 minutes a day on most days of the week.

Manage Health Problems

Managing these chronic health problems can also lower the risk of PAD:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
