Most people with a UTI will have symptoms, such as:

  • Passing urine more often
  • Passing only small amounts of urine at a time
  • Feeling like they need to pass urine right away
  • Problems waiting to pass urine during the day or at night
  • Burning or pain when passing urine
  • Genital itching
  • Pain in the lower belly, lower back, or along the sides under the ribs
  • Blood in the urine—women may have blood on toilet paper after passing urine and wiping
  • Cloudy urine—may also have pus
  • Urine with an unusual smell

An infection that has gone into the kidneys may also cause:

  • Fever or chills
  • Severe pain in the lower back

Children and babies may have less common problems, such as:

  • Irritability
  • Feeding problems
  • Not being able to wait to pass urine
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Slow weight loss and growth—failure to thrive

Older people may have problems like tiredness, confusion, loss of appetite, or trouble walking.
