Most people get COPD from smoking. The risk of COPD can be lowered by reducing exposure to smoke and other toxins.

Smoking

Smoking is the biggest risk factor for getting COPD. Not smoking can help lower the risk. People who already smoke should talk to their doctors about ways to quit.

Environmental Exposures

Try to avoid or limit exposure to:

  • Secondhand smoke
  • Dust
  • Fumes
  • Environmental smoke, such as from burning wood, charcoal, or crop residue

Be aware of air pollution alerts. Avoid outdoor activities when air quality is poor. Do not exercise in areas where levels of car exhaust are high.
