Breast Cancer Support & Survivorship
Local support programs for those with breast cancer
Comprehensive Breast Cancer Support Programs
At Lahey Clinic, we know how important it is to support you and your family in ways that extend beyond treating your breast cancer. We offer resources for you as well as your family members, friends and caregivers.
Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Comprehensive Breast Health Center offers support groups for breast cancer patients and their families. These groups provide an opportunity to find support, share information and learn how others cope with cancer.
For dates and times, please call 781-744-8113 in Burlington, or 781-744-7779 in Peabody.
- Survivors of Breast Cancer Wellness Group: All breast cancer patients are invited, including those who are newly diagnosed, currently in treatment or have completed treatment.
- Look Good, Feel Better Support Group: A program for female cancer patients in active treatment to help cope with appearance-related side effects from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. We offer this program in partnership with the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation and the National Cosmetology Association.
More About Breast Cancer Support & Survivorship
At Lahey’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center locations, we provide you and your family with these types of psychosocial support if you need it:
- Psychiatry and behavioral medicine: These outpatient services include individual treatment and medical therapies, for you and your family members.
- Social work: Services include counseling for you and your family, accessing community and hospital resources, coordinating transportation, understanding insurance and other concerns.
- Spiritual care: We know that emotional and spiritual well-being are key for healing and recovery. Our chaplains offer interfaith, culturally inclusive spiritual and religious support to you and your loved ones.
Reach to Recovery
Lahey partners with the American Cancer Society to offer you help from a Reach to Recovery volunteer. Volunteers are specially trained breast cancer survivors who give patients and families the chance to express your feelings, talk about fears and address concerns. You can ask questions of someone who knows first-hand about similar challenges.
Through Lahey’s integrative oncology program, we approach your treatments and recovery from holistic angles. Our integrative therapies include massage, art, acupuncture, Reiki, yoga and other offerings. Many breast cancer patients find comfort and healing through these integrative methods.
YMCA Pink Program
If you have breast cancer, you can join the YMCA Pink Program. It’s an exercise program that offers all levels of activity, from novice to advanced.
The program gives you and your family a 12-week membership at the YMCA in Reading. In addition to social and emotional support, it can boost your energy, strength and ease of movement while doing daily tasks. Our evaluations of the program show it meets those goals — and it can improve your quality of life.
Breast Cancer Nutrition
Nutrition is an important part of general health. It’s even more important if you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during and after treatment can help you feel better and stay stronger.
Lahey offers registered nutritionists who specialize in oncology. They serve on our multidisciplinary care teams, helping to guide your food choices with evidence-based nutrition recommendations.
Unfortunately, sometimes even the most advanced breast cancer treatments have troublesome side effects. This can include pain, inflammation, numbness or tingling in your nerve endings. We offer a cancer rehabilitation program to help you minimize these side effects.
We also offer lymphedema therapy for those who develop the condition after cancer treatment.
If you need help paying for your cancer care, Lahey financial assistance specialists can explain your options. In addition, the Ellie Fund provides funding and resources for women and their families having breast cancer treatment in Massachusetts.
There are a number of resources around the state to help you restore the look of your natural breasts. Some prosthetics are fit inside a special bra, and some attach to your skin.
