Advanced Care for Motility Disorders
The Center for Motility and Neurogastroenterology Disorders at Lahey Clinic provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for both upper and lower GI motility and functional GI concerns. Our multidisciplinary team consists of doctors, nurses and advanced practice providers. We are also supported by our surgical colleagues, dieticians, speech pathologists, radiologists and mental health professionals.
Services We Offer
Motility refers to muscle movement in the digestive tract. Disorders of the gut-brain interaction (functional) often occur with motility disorders. Diagnosing and treating these conditions often requires a specialized approach.
Each year we perform over 500 patient-testing encounters. Our office consultations are provided by caring and attentive staff, and complex cases are reviewed at our monthly multidisciplinary Foregut Collaborative Case Conference. If needed, our team will work with your referring provider to determine the best plan for longitudinal care.
Our service offerings include:
- Esophageal manometry: Measures how well the muscles of the esophagus work when you swallow. Helps diagnose swallowing problems and reflux.
- Reflux testing, including ambulatory PH testing and Bravo pH monitoring: Tracks acid reflux over time to determine whether symptoms are caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
- Hydrogen breath testing: A non-invasive breath test used to diagnose lactose intolerance and bacterial overgrowth in the digestive tract.
- Anorectal manometry: Evaluates muscle and nerve function involved in bowel movements to assess constipation or bowel control issues.
- Functional luminal imaging planimetry (Endoflip): Advanced imaging performed during endoscopy to assess the size and flexibility of the esophagus and guide treatment.
