What Is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program that’s personalized for you. It may include:

  • Education on lifestyle habits that protect your heart and risk reduction
  • Emotional support
  • Exercise counseling and monitoring
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Stress reduction techniques

The program’s goals are similar to those of all types of rehabilitation: to help you get stronger, feel better physically and mentally, and return to the activities and lifestyle that are important to you. The program is also intended to help you prevent heart problems in the future.

Rehab services may begin during a heart-related hospital stay. But outpatient cardiovascular rehabilitation sessions continue after your discharge. Typically, you attend sessions three times a week for about 12 weeks.

In some cases, you may also benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation.
