More About Neurosurgery

Spine Surgery

The Division of Neurosurgery at Lahey has a strong history of leadership in spine surgery. Our neurosurgeons are experts in minimally invasive procedures and perform half of our fusion surgeries with minimally invasive techniques.

Lahey's spine surgeons have led multiple clinical trials whose results have had major impact in the treatment of spina conditions. Lahey led the SLIP study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2016. In addition, Lahey spine surgeons led the CSM-S study, which was published in JAMA in 2021.

Lahey has been nationally recognized as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Center of Distinction and an Optum Center of Excellence for spinal surgery. At Lahey’s dedicated Spine Center, we develop an individualized care plan for each patient to help regain motion and relieve pain.

Most of our neurosurgeons are fellowship trained in areas such as complex spinal surgery, stereotactic surgery and pain medicine. We have a computerized navigation system that improves surgical accuracy.

Peripheral Nerve Surgery

We evaluate and perform surgery for various disorders of the peripheral nervous system, including:

  • Compressive neuropathy
  • Tumors and trauma
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Cubital tunnel
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Tarsal tunnel release
  • Other nerve decompression issues

Our approach with compressive neuropathy (such as carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve compression) is to perform the least invasive surgery to provide the best result. Tumors of the peripheral nervous system are removed using the operating microscope, often preserving the affected nerve. Peripheral nerve trauma often requires microsurgical repair and, possibly, nerve grafting.

Spinal Fusion Registry

Today, Lahey's Spine Program is nationally recognized for clinical trials and outcomes assessment. We were one of the first programs to collect routine patient-reported outcomes and report them publicly.
