More About Orthopedics

Orthobiologic Therapies

Orthobiologic treatments harness the body’s natural ability to heal itself — promoting recovery, reducing pain, and improving function without the need for extensive surgical intervention.

What Are Orthobiologics?

Orthobiologics are natural substances derived from your own body that help support the healing of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These therapies are often used to reduce inflammation and promote tissue regeneration either through injections or during surgery.

Common types of orthobiologic treatments include:

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): A concentration of platelets from your own blood, rich in growth factors that stimulate and support the body’s natural healing processes.
  • Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC): Harvested from a patient’s own bone marrow, BMAC contains a mixture of cells and growth factors that can enhance healing. At Lahey, BMAC is used during select orthopedic procedures to improve tissue regeneration and surgical outcomes.
Conditions Treated with Orthobiologics

Orthobiologic therapies are being used to treat a range of orthopedic conditions, including:

  • Mild to moderate osteoarthritis (especially in the knee, hip, and shoulder)
  • Tendon injuries (including tennis elbow and patellar tendinopathy)
  • Ligament sprains and partial tears
  • Muscle strains and overuse injuries

These treatments are often recommended for patients seeking alternatives to surgery or for those who may not be ready for more invasive interventions.

While not all patients are candidates, and results may vary, orthobiologic treatments can be an important part of a comprehensive, non-surgical orthopaedic care plan.

Preventing Repeat Fractures

Lahey's Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is dedicated to preventing repeat fractures by identifying and treating underlying bone health issues in patients with fragility fractures.

The American Orthopedic Association has awarded our program Star Performer Status.

Personalized Services

We provide:

  • Comprehensive metabolic bone health evaluations: Identifying osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, and other causes of bone fragility.
  • Evidence-based treatment initiation: Medications and lifestyle strategies to improve bone density and reduce future fracture risk.
  • Collaboration with endocrinology: Access to advanced diagnostic testing and the latest bone anabolic treatments that help regrow bone and restore skeletal strength.
  • Personalized care plans: Tailored to each patient’s health profile, fracture history, and lifestyle.

Too often, fragility fractures are treated surgically without addressing the root cause. Our FLS ensures that every patient receives the follow-up and intervention needed to prevent the next fracture.

Why Choose Us?
  • Integrated with orthopedic trauma care for seamless transition from surgery to bone health management
  • Access to leading-edge therapies, including bone anabolic agents
  • Multidisciplinary coordination addresses the full spectrum of bone health needs
