What Is Interventional Pain Management?
Interventional pain management uses targeted procedures to diagnose or treat pain at its source. These treatments are performed by trained pain specialists and may involve image-guided techniques.

Our Interventional Pain Management Center offers comprehensive care for many pain-related conditions, including:
- Back, neck and spine-related pain, including muscle, joint and spinal cord concerns
- Cancer-related pain, including pain caused by cancer or its treatment
- Headaches and migraine pain
- Nerve-related pain, including neuropathy, which refers to nerve damage that can cause burning, tingling or numbness
- Pain after surgery
- Pain related to stroke
- Vascular-related pain, including circulation concerns such as vascular insufficiency and Raynaud’s syndrome
Pain management may also be part of a broader palliative care plan to support comfort and quality of life.
Providers at the Interventional Pain Management Center do not fill or refill prescription pain medications.

Evaluation begins with a review of symptoms, medical history, and prior treatments. You may have lab tests or imaging studies to better understand the cause of pain.

How To Access Care at the Pain Management Center
Care at the Interventional Pain Management Center begins with a referral from a provider already involved in your care. This may be your primary care provider or another specialist.
Once the referral is received, scheduling staff will help arrange your appointment and explain what to expect. Before your visit, you will receive a pain center questionnaire to complete. This helps the care team understand your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals. You can also get support for referrals and appointment preparation.
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Pain Management
Pain care often works best when providers collaborate. Pain management specialists may work with other clinicians involved in your care, including those outside Lahey, to help ensure treatment plans are effective and coordinated.
Care teams may include:
- Pain management anesthesiologists, board certified in pain medicine.
- Nurses.
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation providers (physiatrists).
- Physical and occupational therapists.
- Behavioral and mental health care providers.
- Surgeons, including neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons.
