Achieve independence in performing daily activities

Occupational Therapy Services

The occupational therapists at Lahey Clinic help you achieve maximum independence after an injury or illness.

Occupational Therapy at Lahey Clinic

Lahey's Occupational Therapy team brings a broad range of skills and clinical expertise, working closely with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary therapy teams to help patients achieve their highest possible level of independence following injury, illness, or disease. Occupational therapists support patients in rebuilding skills, restoring function, and developing the tools needed to re‑engage in meaningful activities across all aspects of daily life.

Whether facilitating a smooth transition home after hospitalization or guiding recovery following surgery or neurological events, occupational therapists empower patients to regain independence, confidence, and safety in daily routines.

At Lahey, our dedicated Occupational Therapy team delivers exceptional care across inpatient and outpatient settings, united by a shared commitment to patient centered, evidence‑based practice.

Our Commitment

Across inpatient and outpatient settings, Lahey’s Occupational Therapy team is united by a single goal: helping patients reclaim the skills, confidence, and routines that allow them to return home and fully reengage in their lives.

Tools for Independent Living

A health condition can change your ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). For example, a bone break or neurological condition can make it difficult to complete certain tasks. Recovery from a surgery or pain from a chronic condition can impact your ability to do things you’re used to doing on your own.

Occupational therapy helps restore your ability to complete everyday tasks, such as:

  • Bathing.
  • Dressing.
  • Feeding yourself.
  • Performing work-related activities.

You might need to learn how to do these tasks in a new way. Your occupational therapist teaches you how to use tools and techniques to be independent in more areas of your life.

Lahey occupational therapists are highly trained experts. We bring a wide range of skills to your care. We partner with your doctors, nurses and other therapists to form a care team that helps you reach your goals.

More About Occupational Therapy

Inpatient Occupational Therapy

Our inpatient occupational therapists play a pivotal role in early recovery and discharge planning across the continuum of care, from the ICU to postsurgical units. They help hospitalized patients achieve their highest level of independence with essential activities such as self-feeding, bathing, dressing, mobility, and work-related tasks.

Injury, illness, or disease can significantly interfere with a patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Occupational therapy focuses on restoring the foundational skills necessary for functional independence, including cognition, upper extremity strength, range of motion, motor control, coordination, and mobility. Using research‑driven assessments and evidence‑based interventions, therapists promote safe progression toward independence and facilitate a timely transition to the most appropriate level of care—often home.

When full restoration of function is not possible, inpatient occupational therapists collaborate closely with patients and families to develop effective compensatory strategies or alternative approaches, supporting safety, independence, and quality of life.

Outpatient Occupational Therapy

Our outpatient occupational therapy services include a growing team of occupational therapists and Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs) who provide advanced, highly targeted care for patients with hand and upper extremity conditions. Therapists help patients restore movement, strength, and functional use of their hands and arms following injury or disease—enabling them to confidently return to work and daily activities.

The outpatient team treats a wide range of conditions, including hand and wrist fractures, nerve injuries, arthritis, tendonitis, and neuromuscular disorders. Individualized treatment plans may include custom splinting, therapeutic exercise, and progressive strengthening to support optimal recovery. Therapists work closely and collaboratively with Lahey’s hand surgeons to ensure comprehensive, coordinated care.

Specialized neurology-focused therapists provide individualized treatment for patients with neurological conditions, emphasizing cognition, mobility, safety, and independence. These therapists collaborate across departments and participate in specialized multidisciplinary clinics, including ALS, PSP, and Huntington’s disease programs.
