Richard W. Nesto, MD, is executive vice president, chief medical officer of Lahey Clinic, a nonprofit, multispecialty health care organization based in Burlington, Mass. In his current role, he is responsible for physician leadership across the organization, clinical practice oversight, educational programs and research initiatives. Dr. Nesto defines goals and responsibilities for all physician leaders and supports their achievement of these goals.
In addition to his clinical duties over the last decade at Lahey Clinic, Dr. Nesto has chaired both the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Division of Internal Medicine, which encompasses 12 specialties and nearly half the medical center's physicians.
A professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Nesto is internationally known for his major clinical and research advancements in the treatment of heart disease in patients with diabetes mellitus. He has an extensive bibliography with nearly 300 scientific contributions to medical literature. He has served as the national spokesperson for the American Heart Association's "Heart of Diabetes" program, and is a member of the board of trustees for Lahey Clinic.
A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Nesto earned clinical and research fellowships in medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
