Female Treatment Options
Oral tablet therapy
DHEA
Natural hormone used to raise testosterone levels
Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors (off label)
Sildenafil (Viagra)
A tablet approved for men. It has been effective in a large percentage of patients, but there are definite side effects. Studies have shown mixed results. Hormone deficiency may hamper results with this drug.
Female testosterone patch
To be released in 2005 or 2006 by Procter & Gamble
Hormone replacement therapy (tablet, patch, gel)
Estrogen (no uterus)
Estrogen plus human progesterone (if uterus is present)
Androgen replacement therapy
DHEA (precursor to testosterone)
Female testosterone patch–release date 2005/6 by Procter & Gamble
Off label-small doses of male testosterone gel
Nonspecific therapies: PDE5 inhibitors (off label), Viagra, Cialis
Studies on Sildenafil (Viagra) in women were mixed, possibly due to the fact that these drugs do not work well if there is a testosterone deficiency.
Zestra
An oily herbal preparation applied to genitals to increase blood flow.
