The dialysis unit provides dialysis treatments for people who are admitted to the hospital. A patient admitted to the hospital will be referred to one of the nephrologists and the dialysis treatment will be arranged through the dialysis unit. Dialysis treatments can be done right in the hospital room.
If you are new to dialysis, both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis requires an access to allow for the dialysis procedure. The Urology or Vascular Surgery services at Lahey will create the necessary surgical access for dialysis.If necessary, a hemodialysis access can be evaluated for adequate blood flow with a specialized X-ray in the done in the radiology department. The surgeon will then explain what is needed to correct the problem.
