A urogynecologist is a gynecologist who specializes in the treatment of women with pelvic floor dysfunction. These doctors have additional training and expertise in the evaluation and treatment of conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, and the muscles and connective tissue that support the organs.
Urogynecologic medical services are offered for the diagnosis and treatment of female pelvic floor (lower abdomen) disorders, including urinary incontinence (overactive bladder) and uterine prolapse.
There are many different urogynecology treatments available for urinary incontinence, urogynecologic disorders and pelvic prolapse. For other types of incontinence and pelvic floor disorders, outpatient or inpatient surgical procedures can be performed, including reconstructive pelvic surgery. Both surgical and nonsurgical treatments are available depending on the diagnosis.
In some instances the gynecologist may prescribe urodynamics testing, a study involving a series of tests to evaluate how the bladder and urethra are functioning work. The test will attempt to re-create your urinary symptoms so that your doctor can determine the best treatment.
